The United States Basketball Writers Association of America and The Sporting
News had previously tabbed Hansbrough with first-team All-America honors,
making him a consensus All-America for the second year in a row. He is the
fifth Tar Heel to win consensus All-America honors on two occasions and the
first since Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins accomplished it in 1983 and 1984.
Phil Ford (1977 and 1978) and George Glamack (1940 and 1941) also were
two-time consensus All-Americas for UNC. Fourteen different Tar Heels have
earned consensus first-team honors a total of 19 times. UCLA and Kentucky
both have 20 consensus picks, followed by UNC (19), Notre Dame (19) and Duke
(18).
A player must win first-team honors from a majority of the following teams
to be recognized as a consensus selection: the Associated Press, the USBWA,
The Sporting News and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The
NABC will introduce its team on Saturday in San Antonio.
Hansbrough is the first Tar Heel to make the Associated Press team since
Joseph Forte in 2001.
