North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn admitted Tuesday he worked with the tutor at the center of the ongoing NCAA investigation into academic fraud, but denied she ever wrote a paper for him.

North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates estimates he threw in the neighborhood of 500 passes during the preseason. As of Monday, he had only thrown one interception. And, as he’s quick to point out, it came on a tipped ball.

The gap in game experience between North Carolina's first- and second-team defense is 207 combined starts. The difference in talent is not as wide, according to coach Butch Davis. But with the uncertainty concerning which players will be available for Saturday's opener in Atlanta against No.21 Louisiana State because of the NCAA investigation, backups could be pressed into duty. Davis, however, said he's confident the 18th-ranked Tar Heels will be prepared.

When the LSU football team kicks off the season Saturday night, the Tigers will take the field against North Carolina with either Richard Murphy or Stevan Ridley as the starter at running back. Murphy, a fifth-year senior, will get his first career start. Or Ridley, a fourth-year junior, will get his third.
