UNC-MD: Williams Press Conference

GREENSBORO – Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams was a bit down after his team lost to North Carolina, 84-72, just 20 days after beating the Tar Heels by 40 points in College Park, Md.

Here is some of what Williams had to say about his second-seeded Terrapins' loss to the seventh-seeded Tar Heels in the quarterfinals of the 50th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Opening remarks

I have to give Carolina credit for playing hard today. We got off to a lead and they seemed to up their play a little bit. We didn't execute real well when they were making their run and I think we gave them some confidence. They took advantage of the situation and did a good job. We're down right now, but we will be back next week and see what we can do.

I'm still proud of this team for finishing with the second seed in the ACC. We won the games when we had to in order to get into the NCAA tournament. I'm proud of that after losing four starters from last year. Guys like Drew (Nicholas) really had to pick it up to help us this year. He did a phenomenal job of filling in and becoming an outstanding college basketball player.

On the play of Raymond Felton

I thought he was really good. It is the third time we played him and that is the best he played against us. We did a good job against him in the first two games. We didn't do as well tonight. He is a very good player. He was an outstanding high school player and he has done a good job at Carolina this year.

On emotion of the game

We had won two against Carolina this year and I'm sure that doesn't set well with the Carolina fans. They were ready and we were ready too. This is a chance to win the championship of the ACC. You have to come down here prepared for what is going to happen with the crowd. That is the way it is going to go and you have to be ready for that. We didn't respond very well when they made their run.
