CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- North Carolina right-handed pitchers Nate Striz and Colin Bates were selected Tuesday in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, bringing the total to number of Tar Heels to three selected over the first two days of the three-day event.

Striz was drafted 660th overall (22nd round) by the Cleveland Indians and Bates was chosen 686th overall (23rd round) to the Washington Nationals.

A former fifth-round pick of the Minnesota Twins in 2007, Striz registered 59 career appearances out of the Tar Heel bullpen. In a limited role in 2010, Striz was perfect on the mound in one postseason appearance and allowed just one hit in nearly two shutout innings of relief at Miami. The Lakeland, Fla., native made 26 appearances as one of Carolina's top arms out of the bullpen in 2009. The right-hander made six postseason appearances in 2008 and 2009, helping the Diamond Heels reach the College World Series for an ACC record four straight times.

Bates, who was also selected in the 37th round (1,113th overall) of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Oakland Athletics, finishes his career with a 3.26 ERA, 16-7 record and 185 strikeouts in 182.0 innings. In his sophomore 2009 campaign, he finished second in the ACC and eighth nationally in appearances, as the Tar Heels advanced to Omaha for the fourth straight time.

The veteran was brilliant in his final game on the mound, tossing two shutout innings while notching five of his six outs via the strikeout in a narrow 3-2 loss at Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament. An outstanding student, Colin is a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and two-time member of the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team. The Naperville, Ill., native graduated May 9, 2010 with a bachelor's degree from the Kenan-Flager Business School.

Five Carolina signees were also selected Tuesday in day two of the 2010 MLB Draft. Right-hander pitcher Stetson Allie was selected 52nd overall (2nd round, Pittsburgh Pirates), infielder Sean Coyle 110th overall (3rd round, Boston Red Sox), infielder Connor Narron 148th overall (5th round, Baltimore Orioles), left-handed pitcher Kent Emanuel 567th overall (19th round, Pittsburgh Pirates) and Jake Cole 736th overall (24th round, Texas Rangers).
