Tar Heel Pros News & Notes

<i>Inside Carolina</i>'s weekly update on former Tar Heels now in the professional ranks. Today's updates are on Ed Cota, Derrick Phelps and Tony Shaver.

COTA - ALL-STAR GAME STAR

* Ed Cota played in the Lithuanian League All-Star Game on Saturday and led his team, the Wolves (players born before 1979), to a 105-97 win over the Eagles (players born after 1978).

According to the game report from Kaunas, Lithuania at Telebasket.com, "The winners were led by Zalgiris' point guard Ed Cota who scored 20 points and protagonized a number of spectacular actions." I think it would be safe to say that Ed Cota was making good things happen for his team.

Through the regular season Cota has played in 26 games for Zalgiris Kaunas (24-3, 2nd-place) averaging 11.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

PHELPS TO THE RESCUE

* Saturday's Limoges - Le Havre French League game was tied at 57 with less than one second showing on the clock. Derrick Phelps (Limoges CSP, France Pro A) was fouled and went to the free throw line for two shots. Phelps' first shot was good. His second attempt was intentionally missed to run out the clock. After surrendering a 57-48 lead, Limoges (6-11) left the court with a 58-57 victory.

Phelps (13.9 ppg, 4.4 apg) finished with 15 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. His backcourt-mate and fellow Tar Heel Donald Williams (16.8 ppg) scored nine points and also contributed four steals to the team's the defensive effort.

SHAVER TAKES TIGERS TO D-3 TOURNEY AGAIN

* For the seventh consecutive season former Tar Heel Tony Shaver has Hampden-Sydney College headed for the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.

On the strength of a 25-2 season, with both losses coming to Randolph-Macon College (27-1) -- currently ranked No. 1 by d3hoops.com -- the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney have been selected to the 48-team field of the 2003 Division III Tournament.

Hampden-Sydney, ranked 4th nationally by d3hoops.com, has a first-round bye and will host the winner of Thursday's first-round game between Savannah Art & Design and Christopher Newport on Saturday, March 9.
