UNC-Maryland: Gary Williams

Posted Feb 22, 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Inside Carolina caught up with Maryland head coach Gary Williams for a brief postgame one-on-one.

IC: Do you think you have Maryland now where Carolina used to be, where every year you’re going to be in the top 15 or top 20?

Gary Williams: Well, each year you fight for that -- there’s no guarantees nowadays in college basketball. I think that’s changed. Back in the 70s, 80s, early 90s, North Carolina had their thing. But there are so many teams that have imitated what Carolina has done and what Duke has done…I don’t think there’s going to be the dominant teams like there used to be.

IC: Do you think Carolina has improved from the first time you played them?

Williams: Yeah -- I mean, today, it was strange, but they’ve settled on a lineup. But you know when you lose a guy like May…I mean May was their Lonny Baxter, that’s what May was. If we had lost Lonny last year and had to deal with that that would have hurt us -- they’re not playing with their full complement of players.

IC: What was your biggest priority strategy-wise coming into today?

Williams: Taking them off the three point line. They average 26 threes a game and that’s a lot -- if they get hot from there they can beat you. I thought we were stronger inside and had more players, but that was the one way they could beat us.
