North Carolina's losses are mounting at the same rate as the national debt, but Coach Roy Williams is confident that his team can still reach the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina has five games left in the regular season, starting today at Boston College at noon in a game that will mark the return of Tyler Zeller, a 7-0 sophomore forward.

North Carolina's NCAA Tournament chances might be looking slimmer and slimmer with each loss, but Coach Roy Williams said Friday he does not think the Tar Heels have given up on the season just yet. "I really don't feel like they've resigned themselves to just playing out the season," Williams said. "It's very difficult for them to do that because they're such good kids, and it's very difficult for them to do that because we can really make practice awfully miserable if we feel that." And the Tar Heels, who have lost five of the past six games, have a chance to pick up a win today when they face Boston College, which has also lost five of its past six, at Conte Forum.

North Carolina coach Roy Williams has been waiting for his team to break out and show more of its talent. But this is no time for too much patience. The Tar Heels, who’ve lost five of their last six games, are slipping off the national radar.

If North Carolina doesn't start winning soon, opposing fans will stop chanting, "NIT! NIT!" and will start taunting the Tar Heels about scrambling for a bid to the even lower-profile College Basketball Invitational. With NCAA Tournament chances remote at this point, the Tar Heels (14-12, 3-8 ACC) could at best be hoping for an at-large bid to the National Invitation Tournament, which features the top 32 teams that don't make it to the premier postseason event. But even a berth there isn't certain if they can't find a way to pull out at least two of their last five games - beginning today at Boston College (12-13, 3-8).

A tradition that produced five NCAA championships and a record 18 Final Four appearances isn’t on display this season. North Carolina is tied with Boston College at 3-8 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Only Miami and North Carolina State are worse. With an overall record of 14-12, UNC, a school that has been ranked in the Associated Press poll more than any other, is out of the Top 25. The Tar Heels are in town today to face BC, and with five games remaining in their regular season, Williams welcomes any positive result.
