UNC-UVa: Game Notes

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina Tar Heels won their second straight game on the strength of Rashad McCants’ return to form and another splendid effort by Raymond Felton in an 81-67 win over Virginia at the Smith Center on Wednesday night.

Here is a look at UNC’s 13th win in 23 games and fourth win in 10 Atlantic Coast Conference contests.

***With the win Carolina leads the all-time series with Virginia, 115-46.

***The Tar Heels improved to 16 at the Smith Center against the Cavaliers.

***Overall, UNC is now 58-5 all-time in games against UVa played in Chapel Hill.

***Virginia’s wins over UNC in Chapel Hill: 1911, 1973, 1981, 2000, 2002.

***The win by the Heels snapped a four-game losing streak to the Wahoos.

***The UVa-UNC series began in the 1910-11 season.

***The Wahoos won the first meeting this season, 79-72. With the loss the Cavs lost out on an opportunity to sweep UNC for the second consecutive year. The only other seasons in which UVa has swept Carolina in the regular season: 1980-81 (UNC beat UVa in the Final Four that year); 1999-2000.

***With the win, Carolina has now won 10 of the last 17 games between the schools and 20 of the last 30.

***Jackie Manuel’s nine rebounds tonight are a career high.

***David Noel only scored four points, but he had five assists to just one turnover.

***The Tar Heels shot over 50 percent (50.8%) for just the second time this year. The only other game in which they did was the opener against Penn State.

***The Tar Heels scored 20 points off of the 21 turnovers they forced.

***Melvin Scott’s 2-4 (both 3s) outing from the field ended a stretch of eight games in which the Baltimore sophomore had hit just 6-37 shots, including 3-24 from 3-point range)

***After scoring in double figures in just three of UNC’s first nine games, Raymond Felton at least 10 points in 13 of his last 14 after pouring in 21 tonight.

***UNC’s victory is its 501st in ACC play. Next in line heading into today's games: Duke (445), Maryland (353), N.C. State (350), Wake Forest (333), Virginia (286), Clemson (232), Georgia Tech* (155), and FSU^ (72). South Carolina won 101 league games from 1953-54 through 1970-71. *Tech began playing in the 1979-80 season. ^FSU began playing in the 1991-92 campaign.
