King Down to Two

Jazz King has narrowed his focus down to two schools.

It's Mississippi and North Carolina.

"[I like both] the coaching staffs and I love both of their atmospheres," King said.

King, a 5-foot-11, 175-pounder from Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes, could make a verbal commitment within the next couple of weeks.

"I have been through all the campus and the school buildings," King said. "… I kind of want to get [a verbal commitment] out of the way."

Regardless of whether he commits within the next couple of weeks or not, King, who doesn't claim a leader, plans to officially visit to both of his finalists. Nothing has been scheduled, but he has talked to UNC about a December official and Mississippi about an official trip in January. King was in Chapel Hill for the UNC-Miami game Saturday.

"The atmosphere was great," King said. "I wanted to be out there myself.

"[The visit] made me like them more, [because I got] to see how they played against Miami, who's supposed to be big time."

Throughout his time on campus Saturday, King conversed a lot with UNC's coaches – especially John Blake, his primary recruiter.

"[Blake] was just like ‘Keep working hard in the classroom and on the field and they are going to keep watching me,'" King said.

UNC is recruiting King as an athlete.

"I like [being recruited as an athlete], because I like to play defense too," King said.

King is known for his role at receiver in Byrnes' high flying offense, where he has made 35 catches for 620 yards and nine touchdowns. However, he has seen significant snaps at cornerback the past two games.

"I almost had my first interception last game," King said.

Byrnes hosts Mauldin (S.C.) Friday in the second round of the SCHSL AAAA Division I playoffs. Less than a month ago, Byrnes routed Mauldin, 72-27.
