Carolina Basketball

The Smith Center in Chapel Hill will be the site of a historic basketball game today when North Carolina hits the playing floor for the second time this season. N.C. Central, UNC's neighbor in Durham, will be the opponent in the Coaches Vs. Cancer Tournament second round at 9 p.m. NCCU, a historically black college, has never played North Carolina in basketball, despite the schools' proximity.

During its first two seasons playing at the NCAA's Division I level, N.C. Central's basketball team traveled more than 47,000 miles across 22 states. So the fact that the Eagles begin their third season of Division I competition tonight with a mere 10-mile bus ride to Chapel Hill would seem like a respite - except that they happen to be facing defending national champion North Carolina on national television in the 2K Sports Classic (9 p.m., ESPNU).
Opener challenges NCCU

Opening night was a success, but not a smash for North Carolina’s men’s basketball team. The Tar Heels downed visiting Florida International 88-72, but had some bumps along the way, turning the ball over 26 times and having unfocused stretches that allowed the Golden Panthers to avoid a true blowout. The sixth-ranked Tar Heels will get another shot at hitting all their marks when they play host to North Carolina Central tonight in the second game of the 2K Sports Classic. It’s the season opener for the Eagles.

The two biggest question marks facing the frontcourt-heavy North Carolina basketball team entering this season were its guard play and perimeter shooting. And heading into the second game, those questions still remain. UNC hosts N.C. Central for the first time in the history of the programs tonight (9 p.m., ESPNU) in the Tar Heels' final home game of the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer at the Smith Center. Tonight's game also is NCCU's season-opener and the debut of first-year coach LeVelle Moton.

The Miami Hurricanes thought they had faced their toughest defensive line last month against Oklahoma. That was until they began preparing for North Carolina. After evaluating game film, UM coach Randy Shannon said the Tar Heels may be more talented than the Sooners. UNC is ranked No. 5 nationally in total defense, allowing 249.4 yards a game.
