MY OFFICIAL VISIT
I left for Chapel Hill with my family at around 11 o'clock in the morning Friday and got there around three o'clock. I met with my grandmother and my great grandmother down there and we got over to see everybody at around four. Then my parents and my grandparents went with the coaches while I went to eat with the team. It was me, the team, the managers, Coach Williams, while my parents were eating with the assistant coaches. We ate on campus and they had this little buffet set up. They said that it's tradition to have it before the season starts.
From there we went onto the Dean Dome and the players started getting ready. They all got into costume and I met with Michael Gbinije and James McAdoo and we hung out in the locker room and played some ping poing. Then Reggie and P.J. got there and at about six we went out and watched the women's teams skits and dances and stuff. We didn't get to see them play because we had to get back down the locker room.
I was eager to see the freshman class. They have a lot of personality. I wanted to see how they would react in front of a big crowd embarrassing themselves. I was kind of surprised at how good a job they did. The rest of the guys, you could tell that they are veterans of the game and are used to being out there.
It didn't hit me that I'd be out there next year until they came out in their game uniforms. I saw Leslie McDonald in his #15 uniform, when last year he was sitting there with me. It hit me that it would be me and Reggie next year and it was kind of scary. Really, it's just more being anxious. You are looking forward to getting out there, but not so much that two minutes of being out there dancing and looking like a fool.
For the scrimmage they broke them up into two teams. The blue and white and played one 20-minute half. They were out there having fun and putting on a show for the fans. From there me and Reggie went out with Justin and Ed and got something to eat. They went to the dorms to get ready for the next morning. Me, Reggie and Quinn then walked around and talked about the school.
The first real practice on Saturday morning was great. You get to see the guys go through a real intense practice and what they do to get better. It was good to see that a lot of the stuff I do in terms of drills to get better is what they do. In high school we don't go at the same level, but it was good to see what I'm getting into. Coach Williams was actually pretty calm during the first practice. They've got a lot of young guys so they have to learn the mechanics of things first.
Practice finished about one and after that a couple of the coaches, my parents and Ed and Reggie went out to lunch at Top of the Hill. From there they took me and Reggie back to the hotel and we got a little rest. Then about six o'clock they came and picked us up and we went out to dinner at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and had dinner with the team. I think I've been there a couple of times before, but it was my first time down there and it was good as usual.
They didn't have practice until like three o'clock on Sunday so we went out on the town Saturday night and they showed us a good time and we had fun. There are a few people who recognize me. It's funny, when you walk around with the team you are just a bystander because people see them. But when it was just me and Reggie, some people recognized us to.
Sunday morning Coach Robinson came and picked me and Reggie up and we went to Coach Williams' house for breakfast. It was great - his wife made us waffles, bacon, eggs and sausage. It was very good. It was definitely a good way to end the visit. It's not often that you get to be around Mrs. Williams. She's a great lady, very nice and easy to relax around. Just to be with them and away from campus was a good feel.
My first practice is coming up on November 8th. I'm very fired up, I can't wait to get the season started. It's been takingtoo long. I think it's going to be a great year. We've got a good team with a lot of juniors and seniors who have experience and we're a very physically strong team so I think it will work to our advantage.
