Here is a look at some notes from UNC’s eighth loss in 19 games over all and fourth in six Atlantic Coast Conference contests.
***With the loss, Carolina’s all-time record against the Yellow Jackets drops to 53-14.
***The loss means UNC has won eight of the last 10 meetings.
***Carolina is now 17-9 against Tech in games played in Atlanta, and is 11-8 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
***UNC is 39-13 against Tech since the Yellow Jackets joined the ACC for the 1979-80 season.
***UNC and Tech split last year with Carolina winning in Chapel Hill (83-77) behind Brian Morrison’s 21 points, and GT winning in Atlanta 86-74 in the Thrillerdome. Tony Akins led Tech with 28 points in that game. Incidentally, UNC nailed 14 3-pointers in that loss.
***Carolina entered having lost consecutive games for the second time this season. Earlier in the year the Tar Heels fell to Illinois and Kentucky in the same week, and last week lost to Maryland and N.C. State.
***Rashad McCants has scored a total of five points in the first half of the last two games.
***McCants was 1-9 in the first half and 4-9 in the second.
***Jawad Williams was 8-10 from the field in the first half, including 3-3 from 3-point range. He was 0-4 – 0-3 from beyond the arc – in the second half. His two points came at the free throw line.
***Tech outrebounded UNC 22-13 in the second half.
***Matt Doherty said he did not play Will Johnson because David Noel had been playing well enough to justify those minutes. It was the first game this season the Morehead Scholar did not play in.
***McCants entered the game having scored at least 20 points in UNC’s last four games: 20 against Clemson; 27 against Connecticut; 26 against Maryland; and 20 against NCSU.
***Raymond Felton only reached double figures in points three times in Carolina’s first nine games. He has done so in each of the Heels’ last 10 games, raising his average from 9.3 ppg to 11.6. In the nine games prior to tonight’s clash with Tech he averaged 13.8 points per outing.
***Felton has hit 18 of 33 from beyond the arc over UNC’s last five games.
***Melvin Scott is 4his last 24, including just 3-15.
***UNC is one win away from its 500th regular season ACC victory. Next in line heading into today’s games: Duke (442), Maryland (351), N.C. State (349), Wake Forest (330), Virginia (283), Clemson (231), Georgia Tech* (153), and FSU^ (71). South Carolina won 101 league games from 1953-54 through 1970-71. *Tech began playing in the 1979-80 season. ^FSU began playing in the 1991-92 campaign.
