UNC-NCSU: Doherty Press Conference

RALEIGH - North Carolina basketball coach Matt Doherty was happy about his team's effort bust disappointed in the result as the Tar Heels fall at N.C. State, 86-77, before a sellout crowd of 19,722 at the RBC Center.

Here is some of what Doherty had to say after his team's seventh loss in 18 games, and third loss in five Atlantic Coast Conference contests.

Opening remarks

We have nothing to hang our heads about. I am very proud of our effort. (N.C. State's) Marcus Melvin took two big shots that really hurt us, but overall this was a tough game. This is a good team (N.C. State) and a tough place to play.

On Felton's knee, which was wrapped in ice after the game, and he had a heavy limp

It's not anything structural, otherwise I would have been a lot more conservative maybe not to play him. It's more of a bruise like you get on the elbow. It looks ugly, it's sore, and it gets stiff. But it wasn't anything, from my understanding, that was structural, or cartilage. But we need to rest him.

On the positives of the game, including Felton's good shooting performance

I hope he (Felton) builds on this shooting. I thought Jackie (Manuel) had a great game. They have him down for four shots, but he got fouled so many times so it's probably more like nine or so. He really had a very good basketball game. I thought Rashad (McCants) had a good second half. David (Noel) play really well. Will Johnson. A lot of guys contributed.

On how he thinks the Heels will respond to losing twice in a row

I think they've responded well. I told the team they played well. When you look at the first half we had a one-point lead. I thought we did a lot of nice things in the first half. That Maryland (loss) game I don't think took too much out of us and hopefully this loss won't take anything out of us as we prepare for Georgia Tech.

On the turning point of the second half

I think we just had a couple of breakdowns. Maybe in transition, maybe in guarding their offense. I thought Melvin hit some big shots. Julius played well in the second half. I thought that we were right there.

On learning from the Maryland game

We cut it to two and even when they had a 10-point lead with 2:50 to go we fought back. I thought we learned from the Maryland game. (Against) Maryland, we were down eight with three minutes to go and lost by 15. Here we were down by 10 with three minutes to go and we had some good chances. I was impressed with the way we got better in late game situations.

On N.C. State's defense

N.C. State is a good defensive team. Melvin and (Josh) Powell are very good defenders that cause problems for the team and Jawad Williams.
