Here is a look at some of the game notes from UNC’s sixth loss in 17 games, and second in four Atlantic Coast Conference tilts.
***With the loss Carolina’s record against Maryland drops to 107-51.
***This was UNC;s third consecutive loss to the Terrapins. They lost last season 92-77 in Chapel Hill and 112-79 in College Park. The 112 points was the most ever allowed by a UNC team.
***The Terrapins started five seniors while UNC started three freshmen and two sophomores.
***Interestingly, Maryland, the defending national champions, started five seniors despite losing four starters from last year’s team.
***In fact, Maryland’s starting five entered the game with 456 career college games played collectively, while UNC’s was at just 133.
***Damion Grant’s rebound with 10:20 left in the game was the first board UNC had gotten from its two centers (including Byron Sanders) since the win over Clemson
***Sanders has played a total of 67 minutes in the last two games and has just one field goal and ZERO rebounds.
***Maryland had runs of 12-0, 11-0 and 14-2.
***Melvin Scott is just 2-13 from the field in UNC’s last two games.
***In Carolina’s wins opponents are shooting only 36percent from the floor, but in losses the opposition is hitting on 49.2% of its shots.
***Carolina entered the contest with a 4-1 record in games decided by five points or less. They have beaten UConn by three, Clemson by two, St. John’s by four, and Rutgers also by four. UNC lost at Miami by three in overtime.
***Carolina entered the game with the third toughest schedule in the nation in the RPI. Maryland is the next highest ACC team at No. 15.
***UNC has two wins over top 10 teams this season, having defeated Kansas, 67-56, in New York in the semifinals of the Preseason NIT, and Connecticut last Saturday in Chapel Hill, 68-65.
***The AC’s record against other power conferences: Atlantic 10 (5-1); Big East (9-5); Big Ten (7-5); Big XII (1-0); C-USA (1-1); Mountain West (0-0); Pac-10 (2-0); SEC (3-4); WAC (1-0).
***ACC records versus non-league teams: Home (59-4); Road (6-7); Neutral (11-8).
