UNC-UConn: Game Notes

UNC-UConn: Game Notes

CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina Tar Heels notched what might be their biggest win of then season in defeating No. 6 Connecticut on Saturday before a sellout crowd of 21,750 at the Smith Center.

Here is a look at some notes from UNC's 11th win in 16 games.

***With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 3-1 against the Huskies.

***Carolina defeated UConn 79-64 in Chapel Hill in the ACC-Big East Challenge in Dec., 1990. The Tar Heels wore their road uniforms in that contest.

***UNC beat the Huskies for the East Regional final, 75-64, in 1998 to advance to the Final Four. That regional final game was played down the road in Greensboro.

***Last season, UConn routed Carolina, 86-64, up in Storrs, Conn. ***The Tar Heels are now 3-1 against Big East teams this season. They have defeated Rutgers, St. John's, and of course today beat UConn, and lost to Miami.

***Carolina center Byron Sanders went 35 minutes without a rebound, but he held UConn's Eleka Okafor to just seven - two offensive - and only 13 points. Okafor wasn't a big factor because of Sanders.

***The Tar Heels missed eight of 14 free throws from the 10:27 mark to the 3:18 mark of the second half before Sanders converted a free throw for a conventional three-point play. Rashad McCants hit a pair with 3.3 seconds left.

***Freshman David Noel entered the game with just four 3-pointers on the season but hit two huge treys in the second half.

***Carolina finished the game shooting 42.2 percent from the floor, their second best total in the last seven games. It was also only the third time in that stretch they shot over 40%.

***Entering the game, Carolina's schedule was rated as the fourth toughest in the nation. Georgia, Miami (OH), and Stanford have schedules rated tougher than Carolina's. Of course with today's meeting with No. 6 Connecticut, UNC's slate should rate higher next week.

***UNC's Raymond Felton entered the game having played at least 40 minutes in three of the Tar Heels' last five games.
