North Carolina signee Jacob Turner was selected with the No. 9 overall pick by Detroit in this week's MLB Draft. After the dust settled, the St. Charles (Mo.) Westminster pitcher spoke with InsideCarolina.com ...

What was your reaction when you found out that you were drafted?

"We just stayed at the house and had a little family thing and were just watching the draft. Obviously going into it we had no idea what was going to happen. It was a really cool experience and I was really honored to be picked by the Tigers."

Who did you first talk with the Tigers to after you found out you were drafted?

"I found out over the TV, really, then I talked to their scouting director David Chadd along with his area scout Marty Miller."

Was the outcome of the draft any different than you expected?

"During the high school season that was what I was focused on and I did not have a lot of contact with teams. My dad and my advisor were dealing with all of that - I was not expecting one thing or another. It was all new to me."

The Tigers have a past history selecting top prep pitchers who have signed with North Carolina - notably with Rick Porcello in 2007 …

"Before the draft, the only thing I had guaranteed to me is a scholarship to North Carolina. The only thing that changed was instead of one option now I have two great options - either the Detroit Tigers or the University of North Carolina. I actually have not talked to the Tigers at all about anything so I cannot really talk about that at the time. I am excited either way. If I come to North Carolina I will be just as excited as to sign with the Detroit Tigers."

Have you been following the Tar Heels’ run to Omaha?

"Of course I have, of course I have. I have been watching them on ESPN recently - it has been great. It will be a battle between Alex White and Mike Leake. Hopefully the Tar Heels can get that first championship."

Can you discuss how you approached your final high school season?

"You know during the winter the biggest thing for me was getting prepared to head to North Carolina in the fall. That was helping my high school team to win at this point and time. I wanted to go into the season with no regrets - no matter how good or how bad I did that I had done everything I could do to be prepared for the situation. I feel I did that this winter, working hard and getting my arm in shape, and I think it really paid off this year."
