May out two months with broken foot

Posted Dec 27, 2002

NEW YORK - North Carolina's biggest fear was realized Friday night. Sean May suffered a fractured left fifth metatarsal and will miss most, if not all, of the conference season.

"During the [Florida State] game I didn't feel it much, but after the game I couldn't walk," May said. "And today during the game I was limping up and down and I really couldn't do anything except I just tried to be out there because we were missing Jawad and Melvin, and I felt I had to play. It just came down wrong and just popped."

May will have surgery in the coming days and miss the next two months. His valiant effort on the court nearly brought tears to head coach Matt Doherty's eyes postgame.

"I got a lump in my throat when I was talking about Sean because I feel bad," Doherty said. "That is no way to play basketball that every time you step on the floor in the back of your mind you’re wondering 'Is my foot going to break or not?' That’s no way to play basketball. I’m relived and I hope he’s relieved that we know now what we’re dealing with. And we are 90-95 percent sure that he’s going to heal 100 percent, and now we can go on."

The Tar Heels will now be forced to play small lineupes, and Doherty will get all he can out of freshmen Byron Sanders and Damion Grant.

"It's gonna be something that we just have to work through it," Rashad McCants said. "Sean's a big part of our team -- a bigger part than you guys even know. And, I think our big men are going to have to step up and I think they will."
