We’re 10-3 right now, so we’re about a third of the way through the season. Early on I think things were going very well. We started off about 8-0 and that was very good for us. Then during the Christmas tournaments we kind of ran into some trouble and went 3-3. It was frustrating the ways that we lost sometimes. We didn’t always play up to our potential, but we’re looking to bounce back.
I think I started off the season playing very well early on. I was helping out my team in all areas. The thing about myself and my team is that we have to stay consistent in all areas of the game. That’s something I have to get better at. It’s tough, you just have to focus all the time and get better at the things you need to work on.
I have to cut down my turnovers a bit. They’ve been a bit out of control the last five or six games, but I think I can get that in check. I can also help my team out more on the boards. Being a tall point guard I can really help out there and it’s just something that I’m committing myself to doing.
The biggest difference this year is my role on the team. With guys like Jason (Clark) gone, now I have to learn how he provided for our team in so many different areas. It’s a lot on my shoulders. I just have to lead by example and be more vocal. It’s a challenge, but I think I’m up to it. We’ve got a young team with something like six sophomores and four juniors and I think that we’ll get it together before the end of the season.
Our team’s trips to California (Mission Prep Classic) and North Carolina (Bojangles Shootout) were a lot of fun. It’s great for bonding being together for that length of time. During Christmas time I think I spent more time with my team than I did my family. It could hurt you, but I think it’s going to make us come together in the end. I think playing all of those tough teams on the road is kind of like college because of all the travel and you always have a good game each time you go out there.
I think the travel is something that I’ve kind of been going through for the last couple of years with basketball and I’ve kind of gotten used to it. I’ve been going through it for the last couple of years with the camps, summer basketball and being away from my family a lot. But, I think it’s something that a lot of my teammates have to adjust to.
It’s fun thinking about going to North Carolina. I think about it every day. I’m like, 'Is it here yet, is it here yet?' But, I still have a lot of things that I need to take care of on the high school level. I still want to lead my team and I want to win a state championship and a conference championship, so I’m focusing on that.
It seems like this is one of their more dominant starts to a North Carolina season in recent history. We took a tough loss to Boston College the other night but it might have been a wake up call. I think this team is going to be very good and that they could go very far. The key is definitely Tywon Lawson. The ball always starts in his hands and he has to defend the point guard and is the first line of defense. He’s definitely the motor to this team. I may be a little bit biased about it because I’m a point guard, but he’s the motor for this team. Tyler Hansbrough is a great player, but it all starts with Tywon.
