Inside Carolina's weekly update on former Tar Heels now playing in the professional ranks.

JORDAN: 'SOMEBODY HAD TO DO [IT]'

* Michael Jordan only scored 2 points while shooting 1-9, but his 9 assists (3 in the last 4 minutes), 8 rebounds and 2 steals did not go unnoticed or unappreciated in the Wizards 95-82 win over the Vince Carter-less Toronto Raptors on Sunday.

"Michael played a terrific game for us," Wizards coach Doug Collins told the press after the game. "He controlled the game, especially when it counted, and he was terrific defensively."

MJ's fellow Tar Heel, Jerry Stackhouse, had to take over scoring duties for Washington and came through with 28 points, 15 coming in the 3rd quarter.

"He does what he needs to do to get the team to win. He basically was a decoy for us tonight. He draws a lot of attention. He gets the ball to the open guy," noted Stackhouse on Jordan's performance.

Jordan decided it was time for somebody to sacrifice their game for the betterment of the team. "I'm not afraid to step up and do that," Jordan said. "We need to win. We need to get that attitude back. Somebody has to sacrfice their game. I don't mind that it's me right now."

Former Toronto player Charles Oakley had a little different perspective on the game. Oakley was disappointed the Toronto crowd did not give the retiring Jordan a standing ovation since it might have been his last game played in Canada.

"You know, that's how they are in Canada. They don't really know basketball. They just come out and watch. They don't know if they're watching polo or lolo," Oakley informed the Associated Press.

COTA & CARRAWELL NO LONGER TEAMMATES

* Ed Cota and former Duke star Chris Carrawell are no longer teammates in Lithuania with Zalgiris Kaunas. The two ex-ACC rivals were featured last week in a lengthy feature in the Raleigh News & Observer.

Carrawell was released by the club last week when an injured player returned to the team.

After two wins over the weekend Zalgiris is now 13-2 in domestic league play. Cota has provided 11.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. In Euroleague games Cota is the league leader in assists through 8 games with 6.5 per game.

PATRIOTS RELY ON CONSISTENT CAPEL

* The NBDL's Fayetteville Patriots (7-6) went 3-0 last week and are now in a 4-game winning streak. Jason Capel, the Patriots starting small forward, made 15-of-27 shots from the field on his way to averaging 14 points per game (14, 15 and 13) on the week.

Capel is the 5th-best free throw shooter (39-43, 90.7%) and the 5th-best 3-point shooter (14-32, 43.8%) in the NBDL through December 15.

PHELPS, WILLIAMS SNAP LOSING STREAK

* Donald Williams scored 22 points and went 5-for-9 from the arc as CSP Limoges (France-ProA) brought a 4-game losing streak to an end on Saturday with an 87-69 victory.

Derrick Phelps aided the Limoges (3-7) cause with an outstanding all-around game that featured 12 assists, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 8 points.

Williams is among the French ProA scoring leaders at 18.5 points per game. Phelps is the league leader in steals with 25.
