Opening remarks:
“We’re very pleased. It was a nice road win with a very enthusiastic crowd and environment. In the first half, they made a nice run and got out in front of us four or five points, and we made a nice run right back at them. And to start the second half, they scored a couple of baskets and got it to five points, I think, at one time and I liked the way we answered. We played with a great deal of poise. It was very balanced – you look down and you’ve got six guys in double figures, and that’s important for us with the way we like to play. We weren’t as smooth as we would like to be, to say the least. We’ve had a lot of guys in and out of the lineup, and the fact that we’re playing [our] first true road game.”

When did you decide to play Tyler Hansbrough?
“The 15-minute mark during warmups. I went out to him at that point, because I wanted to see how he felt. We’ve practiced him two or three days in a row for short periods of time – tried to keep him at 25 minutes or less. And he’s felt great about it. Tonight, I couldn’t keep him out. Every time I tried to take him out, he’d tell me he was ready to go back in.”

On Hansbrough’s status next week:
“I don’t know what I’m going to do in Maui. I don’t know that I can think about playing him three days in a row. If you held a gun to my head right now, I’d say I’m not going to play him three days in a row.”

On getting talented players to buy into the team goal:
“Well, I think the character of our kids is really strong. I’ve been very lucky. Mom and Dad have done a great job with those youngsters and I get the benefits of it. But the other thing is that when they come to North Carolina, we talk about winning championships. We talk about getting rings and hanging banners and those kinds of things, and it’s very difficult to do. But that’s our goal every year. And if we talk about those things in the recruiting period, it’s not a surprise to them when we demand it when they get here. They’re just wonderful kids who I’m fortunate to coach.”

On Deon Thompson’s injury:
“[He] cut his lip and they put several stitches in and they sewed him up at halftime.”

TYLER HANSBROUGH

On the decision to play on Friday night:
“I thought I was going to play. I practiced a couple of days before, so we had discussed it and I was good to go.”

On his performance:
“Everybody knows that I didn’t play the best, but I was just trying to come out there and get back into the groove of things and help out my team and win… I feel a little out of shape. I haven’t been on the court in a while and I haven’t really practiced much, but that will come back.”

On the frustration that comes with the injury:
“It’s unfortunate. I really was disappointed at first, but it’s just part of the game. You have to take care of your body, and whenever it tells you that you’re good to go back out there. I think I’ll continue to get better, but if it hurts at all, I’m going to sit out and rest it and make sure it gets better.”

Did your shin bother you tonight?
“No, it didn’t bother me any tonight.”

Did Tyler Zeller’s injury speed up your return?
“No. I was going to go on how my body felt. If it hurt any, I was going to sit out and take care of my body. I’ve been talking to my dad, so he’s been kind of coaching me through some things and I’ve been working with some different people. I feel like I’m getting a lot better, and I feel like I’m all the way healed, so hopefully this doesn’t come back.”

TY LAWSON

On if Tyler Hansbrough’s return changed anything:
“A little bit. We had a lot more presence in the post. People were scared of him – they had to guard him. He got to the free throw line and made everybody’s job easier, and he got a lot of rebounds.”

On Larry Drew:
“Lately, Larry and [I] have been talking about game planning – what to do in the games and how to play. There’s little mistakes that we’re both making, so it translates to the games. He’s making assists, he’s keeping the offense going and he’s playing great [defense], so that’s what we need to keep going to win this next tournament in Maui.”

On Tyler Zeller:
“He’s handling it really well. He’s my roommate back at Carolina, but he’s handling it very well. It’s really unfortunate just to see someone with as much talent as he has two games into the season go down on a play like that. But I hope he has a speedy recovery. He’ll be back.”

On how his season is going so far:
“Things are going well. My minutes are limited, but that’s okay. I just want to have energy coming off the bench and give the team a little push, some extra energy off the bench, so I think I’m doing well.”
