Roy Williams admits it’s been hard to make many definitive judgments about his top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels after they cruised past Penn 86-71 on Saturday.

North Carolina will play its second game of the season today without Tyler Hansbrough when Kentucky visits the Smith Center for a meeting of college basketball's most successful programs. Hansbrough, last season's consensus national player of the year, is not ready to play because his injured right shin has not healed properly from a stress reaction, according to Coach Roy Williams.

Kentucky's men's basketball team is looking to rebound from a 111-103 upset loss to VMI when it faces North Carolina in Chapel Hill tonight. UNC, meanwhile, is just looking to rebound, period.

The News and Observer

First, the obligatory Tyler Hansbrough update: North Carolina's center will not play against Kentucky tonight. UNC coach Roy Williams still doesn't know when Hansbrough will suit for the Tar Heels as he recovers from a stress reaction in his right shin.

Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie was surprised when a reporter told him that North Carolina senior Tyler Hansbrough won't play tonight when the Wildcats take on the top-ranked Tar Heels. To Gillispie, it didn't really matter. "Then they're down to four or five pro players instead of six or seven," Gillispie said.

Kentucky Coach Billy Gillispie practically guaranteed that his team will play "dramatically" better in its second game of the season. But given that the opponent is No. 1 North Carolina, Gillispie sounded braced for an 0-2 start to this season. That would be historic. Only twice since 1926 has UK started a season with two losses: 1975-76 and 2000-01.

Coach Butch Davis has reversed his thinking on North Carolina's quarterbacks and will open competition at the position before Saturday's game against N.C. State. Davis now wants to watch a week of practice by Cameron Sexton and T.J. Yates before choosing a starter for the noon game at Kenan Stadium in UNC's home finale. Sexton is the current starter but Yates, the starter for the first three games, has returned from a broken left ankle suffered on Sept. 20.

North Carolina coach Butch Davis has reopened the starting quarterback position after all. A day after saying junior Cameron Sexton would remain behind center for Saturday's game against N.C. State, Davis said Monday he planned to tell Sexton and sophomore T.J. Yates to be prepared to start.
New QB for UNC?
The News and Observer

After meeting with his coaching staff late Sunday night, Butch Davis has changed his mind. Turns out, North Carolina will open its quarterback position for competition between T.J. Yates and Cameron Sexton in advance of the No. 25 Tar Heels' grudge match against N.C. State on Saturday at Kenan Stadium.
