UNC Visit Tops Raper's List

UNC Visit Tops Raper's List

Former Clemson verbal commitment Larry Raper made his first unofficial visit to North Carolina for Saturday's UNC-Georgia Tech game. The 5-foot-10, 163-pound athlete from Shelby (N.C.) reflected on his trip with high praise.

"I think, right now, that's the best visit I've been on so far," Raper said. "Really just being around everywhere [is why I feel that way]. I stayed down there with [Tavorris Jolly] and he showed me around."

The visit impressed him so much that Raper, who is less than a month removed from his Clemson de-commitment, goes as far as to say he has a leader.

"[UNC] probably would be my leader," Raper said.

Raper's visit revolved around UNC's 28-7 victory over Georgia Tech.

"[UNC] played really well," Raper said. "They got a lot of support from the fans."

During Raper's stay, he received an opportunity to speak to both John Lovett, his primary recruiter, and Butch Davis. While his conversation with Lovett wasn't anything out of the norm, Davis discussed setting up an in-home visit.

"[Davis] was telling me they'd love to have me down there, he asked me about my grades, and he said we have to set up a visit to my house next month when the head coach is allowed to come," Raper said.

Since he verbally committed to Clemson so early on (September '07), UNC didn't receive a true opportunity to recruit Raper and thus never offered a scholarship. UNC still has yet to put an offer on the table and hasn't discussed the topic recently, according to Raper.

Sometime this week, Raper hopes to finalize an official visit date with UNC. He has already scheduled an official trip to NC State (Nov. 29 against Miami), and plans to also officially visit Clemson and South Carolina.

Raper, who aims take all of his official visits by mid-December, hopes to make his college decision before Christmas.

UNC, like most schools, is recruiting the speedy Raper as a slot receiver and return specialist in the mold of Brandon Tate.

At Shelby, Raper plays wingback in a wing-t offense. As a junior, he rushed for 722 yards and ten touchdowns on 103 rushes while catching 13 passes for 316 yards and another score. He accumulated 575 yards and ten touchdowns on 71 carries as a sophomore and made 14 receptions for 424 yards and five touchdowns.

This Friday Shelby will host Black Mountain (N.C.) Owen in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A Playoffs.
