Carolina Football

The North Carolina Tar Heels and Cameron Sexton will walk into Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday stronger than when they walked out of it two years ago. And there's hope that UNC will be able to end an annoying losing streak of 13 games, and win in Charlottesville for the first time since 1981.

Casey Barth got the same treatment at North Carolina that his big brother once enjoyed. Connor Barth became a celebrity as a freshman in 2004 when he was carried off the field on his teammates’ shoulders following a 42-yard field goal at the buzzer that beat then-No. 4 Miami. The Tar Heels did the same thing for Casey during their final workout before last week’s Notre Dame game – and it worked.

The ACC's oldest rivalry resumes Saturday in Charlottesville, Va., the 113{+t}{+h} meeting in a series that dates back to 1892. And for North Carolina fans, it only seems like it's been that long since the Tar Heels won a game at Virginia. The suddenly resurgent Cavaliers (3-3, 1-1) haven't lost a home game to No. 18 UNC (5-1, 1-1) since 1981, a current streak of 13 straight wins.

In each of North Carolina’s victories this season, the Tar Heels won a critical category needed to be successful in college football. Finding a way to win the turnover battle, regardless of the method, improves any team’s chances to end up the victor. Entering Saturday’s game at Scott Stadium against Virginia (3-3, 1-1 ACC), UNC leads the nation in turnover margin and boasts a plus-13 ratio in its five wins.

The University of Virginia recently lifted a ban and allowed fans to post signs in Scott Stadium again, but Clint Sintim says he hasn't noticed any. What the Cavaliers standout linebacker has noticed are signs of progress on the field. Though Virginia (3-3) isn't an ACC power, neither is it a pushover opponent for 18th-ranked North Carolina, which goes to Charlottesville on Saturday.

Trimane Goddard was on the sidelines, sitting out the season with a fractured foot, but North Carolina's last trip to Virginia made enough of an impression that the senior safety can offer a succinct recap of the lowlights -- and the fallout from them -- without much effort.

The Durham Herald-Sun

After his team scored a season-high 35 points in last weekend's win against East Carolina, Virginia coach Al Groh had a moment to reflect on how his offense has progressed this season. Of course, it's easy to grow when you start at the bottom.
