SEPTEMBER 2008

SUMMER WRAP-UP

I think that our team did a great job this summer coming together and winning the Peach Jam. Individually, though, I don't think I had a great summer. I've got to keep striving and doing things that I need to do so that my game keeps coming together. We only won one tournament and I put that on myself being the point guard. I don't think I shot the ball as well as I could have or helped out in some certain areas.

Some of the highlights of the summer were getting to play in the Nike Global Games. We got to play against Serbia and Puerto Rico and got to play another US team in the championship. Even though I got hurt, it was a lot of fun. It was an experience like no other and I look forward to doing it again next year. It's a different style with the FIBA rules and you have to be able to adjust your game.

I got a deep thigh contusion that happened down at Nationals in the next to last game. I had to sit out the last game and then try to rest and rehab. I tried to play through it and hurt it again the second game at the Global Challenge and had to sit out. It's very frustrating. Even when I got back to my high school it was hard to sit there and watch my team in things like open gym because I should be out there getting better with the rest of them. But you have to be patient and make sure that you give it time to heal.

Our high school team went to Italy recently to play some teams there. Again it was a thing where it was frustrating that I didn't get to play and my team was out there getting better, but off the court we got to see the sights like the Coliseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The best part of the trip was that being together for that week and not being able to speak to anybody else because of the language barrier we really had to come together. We got to spend a lot of time together off the court just getting closer and that's going to be important.

FUTURE TEAMMATES & FUTURE RIVALS

It was a lot of fun getting to know Reggie [Bullock] and John [Henson] on and off the court this summer. When we were off the court we hung out a lot together. On the court we got a chance to get to know each other. You have to want to be unselfish and get each other shots. In December I actually get to play against Reggie in a game in Maryland that's probably going to be on ESPNU. When I get to Carolina in a couple of years and get to play with them I'm going to be excited.

And it's crazy that one of my best friends, Tyler Thornton, just committed to Duke. He called me about 30 minutes after he committed. It was him, Josh [Hairston] and Andre [Dawkins] on three-way and they wanted to talk trash and let me know what was up. I said ‘Hold on a minute' and gave Reggie a call and it was funny because we were all on five-way talking trash. It was a pretty tough call who won, but they were in the moment and we were holding our own. Hopefully we'll get to play DC Assault with Boo Williams and there will be five UNC and Duke commits on the court. Then, we know what will happen in college.

BUSY WEEK AHEAD

I probably feel about 80-90 percent right now. I'd say I'm about two weeks away from 100 percent. Now that I can play in an open gym and do some running on the court, I'll be okay. I just need to get healthy so I can be comfortable out there and do the things that I know I can do.

I've got a lot going on in the next week. On Wednesday the coaches are coming to my open gym. I think it's going to be Coach Holladay. On Saturday I'm going down to Chapel Hill to work out and probably go to the Virginia Tech game. It's fun down there because everybody makes you feel at home and it's a great place to be. You're down there with the team at all times and it feels good.
