North Carolina will start scratching an irritating seven-year itch Saturday when it opens its football season against McNeese State at Kenan Stadium. UNC will begin its second season under Coach Butch Davis against McNeese, an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision power from Louisiana. The Tar Heels are brimming with confidence from what they have called a successful month of practice after a productive offseason.

With so many expectations on North Carolina's season-opener against McNeese State on Saturday, tailback Greg Little made the Tar Heels' goal clear: "We're going to try to kill the ant with the sledgehammer." But the question at some positions remains: Who's going to try to wield that hammer?

When it comes to kickers, North Carolina coach Butch Davis is punting on specifics. As the Tar Heels continue preparations for Saturday night's opener against McNeese State, Davis indicated Monday that both Jay Wooten and Casey Barth will kick against the Cowboys. He declined to declare a breakdown of responsibilities among kickoffs, extra points, short field-goal attempts and long field-goal attempts.

Butch Davis entered the Kenan Stadium press room, made his way to the podium and framed his body behind it, a hand on each edge. "All right, let's get this started." Davis meant the press conference, but he might have a slightly bigger beginning on his mind, too.

Greg Little knows people are paying attention to North Carolina's football program again. The running back is eager to give them something to watch. "We're going to go out and kill the ant with a sledgehammer," Little said Monday. "That's what we're going to try to do. We're going to go out and win big. There's a lot of eyes on us right and that's why we have that mentality about the ant and the sledgehammer. We're just going to try to obliterate teams." After years in which simply winning games was enough of a challenge, the Tar Heels have even higher hopes for themselves after they were tabbed as a darkhorse to sneak into contention in the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division.
