Almost everything is settling into place at North Carolina as Butch Davis begins his second season as coach. The adjustment period is over. The players know Davis' system better, and the coaches no longer have to question whether someone is playing at the right spot. Now comes the serious business: winning.

Former North Carolina kicker Connor Barth has plenty of reasons for wanting to beat out Nick Novak for the Kansas City Chiefs' starting job. There's the paycheck, of course. And the dream of playing in the NFL as a rookie. And then there's the bye week. "That's the weekend UNC plays Notre Dame," he said in a phone interview this week. "And it would be a dream come true -- me kicking in the NFL, then being able to come back to Kenan Stadium and watch my brother kick for the Tar Heels.
