UNC-ODU: Taylor Press Conference

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion coach Blaine Taylor spoke to Inside Carolina after his team fell, 67-59, to visiting North Carolina in the first game ever played in the school's $62 million arena.

Here is what Taylor had to say.

On facing UNC in the first game of the new arena and playing well

It's kind of hard for me to fathom, I'm mot really into moral victories, I'm not really into saying we hung in there with them for 40 (minutes). But I guess in the aftermath we were really able to play with them. I guess the stat sheet would indicate new were competitive with so few turnovers and outrebounding them. But they were the better team today. They made more shots. They made more plays. They deserved to win. But it gives me a good indication we can compete with good teams, and they are a good team and going to be very good.

On why they had 24 offensive rebounds

One of the reasons is that we handled the trap effectively. We had two or three different things that we thought we could do against the trap. So we thought we were ready for it. And once we were able to take shots when we knew our teammate was shooting the ball, we would have a chance to board the ball. And so I thought out ability to handle the trap was really why we had a chance to board the ball.

On UNC's main three freshmen

I think it's as good a threesome as there is in the land. I know Arizona has good freshmen, but they might not be these guys and they aren't playing the roles that these guys are. Pointer, post, breakout wing, they have it all. So this is as good a threesome, particularly at different positions and filling their needs. They needed a point guard. They needed a wing. They needed a post player. They have lost so much to the NBA and graduation, with Forte leaving before last year. They filled their needs, so hats off to the coaching staff for getting those guys.
