Inside Carolina's weekly feature on the Tar Heel baseball team ...

Talk with UNC baseball fans on Inside Carolina's Diamond Heels Message Board
Week In Review: The Tar Heels returned to the field after their final exam break, beating North Florida in a two game series and winning the weekend ACC series at No. 24 Virginia. The Tar Heels won the first two games in Charlottesville and lost a six inning rain shortened game in the Sunday afternoon getaway game. The Tar Heels have won 19 of their last 21 games and are ranked No. 1 in the country with their 42-9 record (20-6 ACC).

• May 6 vs North Florida (Cary, N.C.) - W (11-5)
• May 9 vs Virginia (Charlottesville, Va.) - W (9-3)
• May 10 vs Virginia (Charlottesville, Va.) - W (5-2)
• May 11 vs Virginia (Charlottesville, Va.) - L (5-4) 6 Innings

Batter of the Week: Sophomore Dustin Ackley continues his torrid hitting, batting .526 for the week while getting on base at a .591 percent clip. He scored six times, drove in six runs with ten base hits and was walked three times. He also stole two bases, bringing his season total up to a team leading 17 thefts, while only being caught four times.

Pitcher of the Week: Senior fireman Rob Wooten appeared in four of the five games this week and pitched seven innings of scoreless relief. He pitched 4.1 innings on Saturday in Charlottesville, earning a win in his longest appearance in his career. He struck out eleven batters on the week, while only giving up three hits and a walk.

Close Call of the Week: With the impending suspension of play looming on Sunday afternoon, the Tar Heels scored to take the lead in the top of the sixth at Davenport Field. The Wahoos then started off the bottom of the inning with two singles and an intentional walk. Brian Moran barely missed striking out Virginia's first baseman Jeremy Farrell on two very close pitches before Farrell deposited a bloop single in front of Carolina right fielder Tim Fedroff -- scoring what turned out to be the game-winning runs. Moran was ejected from the game in the play’s aftermath as the rains washed away any chance to sweep the series.

Around the Coastal Division: Top-ranked Miami (22-3 ACC) won its series against Virginia Tech (5-22 ACC), but lost the day game of a doubleheader on Saturday when Hokie freshman starting pitcher Justin Wright pitched a complete game victory in Blacksburg. Georgia Tech (14-13 ACC) won its series against Clemson, while Duke (8-17-1 ACC) was swept by Wake Forest in the final series to be played in Gene Hooks Stadium.

Looking Ahead: The Tar Heels have their final regular season game on Tuesday evening at the USA Baseball Training Facility against Winthrop and then head to Coral Gables to take on the top ranked Miami Hurricanes in the last regular season series before the ACC Tournament. All of these games are available for viewing on ACC Select and the radio broadcast will be on the Tar Heel Sports Network. The final game of the Miami series will also be televised on RSN.
