Signee Update: Jamal Womble

Since the conclusion of his football season, North Carolina signee Jamal Womble has concentrated on one thing – his future college career at UNC. The 5-foot-10, 225-pound tailback has even declined to participate in basketball and track after playing both sports since his freshman year.

"This year, I have to get ready to make a big transition," Womble said. "It's not like going to another year of high school. I'm trying to get on the field as early as possible, so I need to be as ready as I can."

In addition to following the workout regimen sent to him by UNC, Womble is doing speed training.

"It's going great," Womble said.

Womble is currently up to his desired playing weight of 226 pounds.

"I'm pretty comfortable at 225-226," Womble said. "Speed-wise and everything, this is the weight where I can stay fast and still be big."

Womble, who says he has already passed the NCAA Clearinghouse, will arrive on campus on June 15th.

"If I work hard, I'll accomplish everything that I want to accomplish – in the classroom and on the field," Womble said. "With hard work and dedication, I can do anything."

At Sierra Vista (Ariz.) Beuna, Womble finished his senior season with 1,787 yards and 20 touchdowns on 170 carries – setting his high school's career and season rushing records.

When Womble was recruited last fall, he was expected to help boost UNC's mediocre rushing attack. However, sophomore Greg Little, who emerged as a potentially reliable tailback after moving from wide receiver at the end of last season, came out of spring practice as the clear cut projected starter for 2008.

"I know Greg Little is an amazing player, a tremendous athlete. But the coaches are telling me the same thing as when they were recruiting me – they're going to give me a chance to play right away," Womble said. "They're going to give me every opportunity [to earn playing time]."

Womble says he's in regular contact with Kenny Browning, his primary recruiter and UNC's running backs coach, and Charlie Williams, UNC's wide receivers coach.

Womble's high school jersey No. 5 is open on UNC's roster. He said he hopes to fill that opening and wear No. 5 during his UNC career.
