Today's Carolina links from around the ‘net.......

Carolina Basketball

Coach Roy Williams of North Carolina wasn’t sure in early February what kind of team he would have for the NCAA Tournament. He has a pretty firm idea now as UNC prepares to play Mount St. Mary’s in Friday’s first round of the East Regional at the RBC Center in Raleigh.

No team in the NCAA Tournament will enjoy more favorable playing conditions this week or next week than North Carolina, but Coach Roy Williams said he isn’t convinced that he has been handed a guaranteed trip to the Final Four.

Much has been made of Tyler Hansbrough's expanding offensive repertoire. The North Carolina All-American has become deadly with his mid-range jumper, facing up on defenders more and more often. He also has become more comfortable putting the basketball on the floor and has a nifty spin move he breaks out from time to time. But the fall-back shot for Hansbrough remains the same. Back down an opponent in the low post, turn toward his left shoulder and put up a .... well, what exactly is it?

Going to the NCAA Tournament means hardly going anywhere at all for North Carolina's Tar Heels. The men's bracket has North Carolina starting in Raleigh. If the Tar Heels win two games, they go to Charlotte for one or two more.

Neither Deon Thompson nor Alex Stepheson were playing well enough to be on the floor for North Carolina when it mattered most at the ACC Tournament, a fact that leaves Roy Williams a bit concerned about his power forwards heading into the NCAA Tournament.

After a North Carolina fan grabbed his bag full of blue and white T-shirts off the counter, Shrunken Head Boutique manager Genny Wrenn ended the transaction with "Go Tar Heels." This is the typical send-off most shoppers receive at the popular store on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, where a boy in a Tyler Hansbrough jersey hanging to his knees dribbles a ball across the crosswalk, a college-aged girl wearing Tar Heels pajama pants in broad daylight is a fashion statement and $16.99 "Psycho T" T-shirts decorate storefront windows like Christmas displays at Macy's.

The Chicago Tribune

Mount St. Mary's and UMBC arrived here yesterday for the NCAA men's tournament trying to remain unruffled at the prospect of playing two of the nation's top basketball programs tomorrow and coping with their opponents' many fans.
