Townsend graduated from San Jose (Calif.) Valley Christian High School in
2005 and played one season at Los Altos Hills (Calif.) Foothill C.C. in
2006. He was recruited to Nebraska by Carolina assistant coach John Blake,
but did not enroll and sat out all of 2007.
"Joseph is a talented defensive addition to this class," said head coach
Butch Davis. "One of the goals of this class was to build depth in our
defense line and we think Joseph will make an impact at defensive tackle.
His year of experience in junior college should also be helpful as we
develop our younger players."
A native of San Jose, Calif., Townsend was a four-star defensive tackle by
Scout.com last season and was ranked the No. 18 junior college player in the country by SuperPrep. He was named first team all-league his senior season at Valley Christian. His brother, Larry Townsend Jr., is a former defensive tackle for the New Orleans Saints.
