This year I think we are very talented. I think if we come together as a team that there aren’t many teams in the country that can play with us -- but that’s if we do. We have Jason Clark going to Georgetown and he’s a great scorer that plays very hard. Then we have a 6-10 center Frank Ben-Eze going to Harvard. He’s going to be good for us and we also have a sophomore transfer Marcus Carmen. He’s coming along and rebounds well and scores well. We are going to be pretty good this year.
I see my role on the team as just being an overall leader. I score when I have to and give the ball up to my teammates when I have to. I also get stops on the defensive end and try and come up with rebounds. I just am trying to be a leader on this team.
Supposedly AAU ball has better talent, but it’s always going to be easier when playing against AAU players than guys in high school because in high school you have a coach that is scouting you all year and they know your strengths and your weaknesses. They know where you like to shoot the ball, so I think it’s a lot harder playing high school ball than AAU.
As a team, our goal is just to get better every day. Of course we want to win a league championship and a state title, where we’d probably play Benedictine and Ed Davis in the championship. Overall we just want to get better every day.
Individually, I just want to improve from last year and help my team more on the defensive end -- with rebounding and being a lockdown defender.
Helping us reach our goals is our coach, Joe Wootten. He is very tough and strenuous. He really pushes us to get better every day and he focuses on the detail a lot, which you don’t find in many coaches, but it is definitely a plus. I think that’s going to help me a lot when I get to Carolina.
We are doing pretty good so far. We are 4-and-1 and we beat DeMatha this past Friday, but we lost earlier in the week to Gonzaga. We are getting better, we just need to take care of the little things on the court and hopefully in the end we’ll come out on top.
So far I’m doing pretty well (14.4 ppg, 7.6 apg). First game I came out and I didn’t play very well at all, but we still got the win and that was encouraging. Ever since then I’ve been playing well and scoring and getting my teammates the ball in the right positions and just helping my team overall.
UP NEXT: NATIONAL STAGE
We left on Tuesday for Las Vegas. We are in a tournament out there and Bishop Gorman is in it and so is Reno High with Olek Czyz and we’ll probably get to see them later on in the tournament. Then the day after Christmas we leave for the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach. It has Arlington Country Day (Fla.), Duncanville (Texas) and St. Edwards (Ohio). It’ll be a couple of really good tournaments.
