CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- North Carolina football players Jermaine Strong and Andre Barbour, who were suspended indefinitely on Oct. 22 for violating team and University policy, are not expected to rejoin the team. The players were notified of the decision by head coach Butch Davis during meetings this week.

"Coach Davis has informed Strong and Barbour that he has recommended to University officials that their scholarships not be renewed for the 2008-09 academic year," Kevin Best, UNC's Director of Football Communications, told Inside Carolina.

Strong, a sophomore, began the 2007 season as a backup cornerback, but took over the starting spot after Kendric Williams suffered a career-ending injury against Virginia Tech. Strong recorded nine tackles and one pass break-up through the first seven games of the season.

Barbour, a sophomore offensive lineman, saw limited action at left tackle.

"It's disappointing to have to take this action," Butch Davis said on Oct. 22 of the suspension. "Both players had a tremendous opportunity to help this football team."
