Rice Suffers Season-Ending Injury

Posted Sep 4, 2007

Chapel Hill, N.C.-- University of North Carolina linebacker Chase Rice injured his ankle in the first half of Carolina's 37-14 victory over James Madison and will require season-ending surgery.

"I'm disappointed for Chase and for our program," said head coach Butch Davis. "He was significant on special teams and played well in the ball game Saturday. I hate losing him."

A junior from Asheville, N.C., Rice started at outside linebacker and made one tackle and broke up a pass that led to an interception. True freshman Bruce Carter will start in his place Saturday against East Carolina.

Last season Rice started three games and played in all 12, recording 31 tackles, one sack and one interception, and he appeared in all 11 games as a redshirt freshman in 2005 as a reserve linebacker and on special teams.
