Lemming, a 6-4, 295-pound junior from Houston, Texas, continued to have
problems with his right shoulder in the first week of fall training camp.
He had two previous surgeries on the same shoulder, including the most
recent one following the 2006 season which caused him to miss all of spring
practice. He played in seven games in 2006, and made his first career start
against South Florida at center. He also played guard and tackle during his
UNC career.
Hicks, a 6-5, 270-pound junior tackle from Highland Springs, Va., had
persistent knee problems during his career at Carolina.
"Even though injuries are a part of the game, I hate to see players get
hurt," said Davis. "I know how much these guys wanted to contribute this
year. I went through a similar situation as a player at Arkansas and I know what they are going through. They will always be a part of the Carolina family and Ben is going to work with us as a student coach this year. I
expect both of them to continue their education at North Carolina and earn
their degrees."
