"I committed today," said Okakpu. "I liked it before. And then I just met with Butch Davis. I like Coach [Tommy] Thigpen and I liked Coach [John] Blake, and I liked what they had to say."
Okakpu, a 6-foot-1 200-pound linebacker from Roswell (Ga.), selected UNC over scholarship offers from Clemson, Auburn, Georgia, Louisville, Miami, Mississippi, Purdue, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech, among others.
"[UNC] just seemed like they had a lot of really good people," said Okakpu. "And I really liked the campus and everything."
Okakpu unofficially visited UNC for the first time in early July and left claiming that the Tar Heels had a slight edge.
Before this weekend, Okakpu had hinted that he might make a verbal commitment during this visit.
"I kind of [thought I was going to commit], but not necessarily," said Okakpu. "This visit was just to seal the deal."
Okakpu says his commitment to UNC is "pretty firm."
"I don't think [I'll visit other schools]," said Okakpu. "I'm just going to take my official [visit] here to North Carolina."
Late Friday night, Okakpu arrived in Chapel Hill with his parents, older brother, and younger brother. His family drove around the campus on their own and then had a late dinner.
Saturday morning, Okakpu sat down with Davis in his office.
"He talked about how he's looking for players that will work real hard in the classroom and also on the field," said Okakpu.
Okakpu then met with defensive line coach John Blake.
"[He talked about] how he's a big family guy and stuff," said Okakpu.
Right before the coaches had to leave to prepare for practice, Okakpu spoke to Davis, Blake, and Thigpen.
"I said this is where I want to go," said Okakpu. "They were really excited. They called the other coaches."
UNC plans on utilizing Okakpu as a WILL (weakside) linebacker.
Okakpu played a major role in Roswell's championship defense. He accumulated 121 tackles including nine for a loss and a sack, and picked off three passes. He was named to the all-state, all-region, and all-county teams for his junior year accomplishments.
