UNC Leads for Howard After Visit

Travis Howard's well-anticipated unofficial visit to North Carolina turned out to be much better than expected.

"I will say it was the best visit, so far, that I've been on," said Howard. "I can't complain. Everything was right. The coaches, they're real nice and cool guys – Coach [Chuck] Pagano and [John] Blake and all them."

The visit catapults UNC into Howard's leader position.

"I feel strong about North Carolina now," said Howard. "I never really had the intentions on going there. I didn't think North Carolina was that type of place. But by me visiting and all, I really like it now.

"I would have to say they're my leader right now, I can't lie."

Howard, a 6-foot-1 170-pound cornerback, arrived on campus Friday morning with his Miami (Fla.) Krop teammates and left Sunday afternoon. While his teammates participated in UNC's three-day team camp, Howard used his stay to get acquainted with the school and football program.

The majority of Howard's visit was spent with current UNC players.

"We were with them all day," said Howard. "After we got through with the coaches, we were right there with the players. Every time we go to talk to the coaches, we were right back with the players. That's who we were mainly with was the players."

Howard spent the most time with Kentwan Balmer, Durell Mapp, and Marvin Austin.

"They mainly just told me about the coaches," said Howard. "[They said] they're not just for show. The coaches don't just act like this because I'm on a visit, they really are cool guys."

Howard also spent a great deal of time with Pagano and Blake.

"Coach Pagano just asked me if I liked the place and is it what I thought it would be," said Howard. "They mainly told me if I came, I'd have a good opportunity to play as a freshman and I'd get a lot of playing time."

Howard also received a tour of the campus that included the weight room and the Smith Center.

"Oh, man, it was the best campus I've seen so far," said Howard. "I just liked the overall atmosphere and people and everything."

Howard also met with members of the academic support staff.

For now, Howard said he is undecided on when he'll make a verbal commitment, but could make a decision prior to the start of his senior football season.

Howard said he is finished with visits for the time being as he prepares for his senior season. In addition to UNC, Howard has visited Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Tennessee.
