Ed Davis: 'Tradition Was The Biggest Factor'

Ed Davis thought he would wait until August to make his final decision. The plan was to take a final trip to Chapel Hill next month and then make his choice. But he realized that final trip wasn't necessary.

The 6-foot-8, 215-pound senior-to-be was sure he wanted to attend North Carolina.

"I thought it would be a good choice for me to go there and the system that they run fits me perfect," Davis said. "I just didn't want this process to run any longer."

Throughout the summer Davis wavered back and forth between his three finalists -- North Carolina, Virginia and Connecticut. In the end, the Tar Heels won out for a variety of reasons.

"I think it was the best decision for me basketball wise and academics wise," said Davis, who is Scout.com's No. 2 ranked overall player in the 2008 class. "The tradition was the biggest factor."

The past two weeks Roy Williams and his staff have followed Davis closely. Williams watched him a handful of times at the LeBron James Skills Academy in Ohio and in North Augusta, S.C. at the Peach Jam.

"When we were playing AAU all my teammates were like ‘Roy Williams is here to see you,' and that wasn't really a factor in my final decision, but I certainly noticed it."

Davis is the second member of the 2008 class to commit to the Tar Heels. Larry Drew, who committed to Roy Williams in May, has been in Davis' ear recently and that played a role in the decision as well.

"I've been talking to him a lot lately -- him and his dad. I think it's going to be a great fit."
