Ga. LB Will Visit UNC

Ga. LB Will Visit UNC

Judging by the tag team recruiting efforts of the Tar Heel staff, Steven Sylvester appears to be a major target of North Carolina's for its 2008 recruiting class.

"I talk to Coach [John] Blake and Coach [Tommy] Thigpen the most and they've offered me a scholarship," said Sylvester. "I usually speak to them on a weekly/every-other-week basis. Basically one [coach] one week, one [coach] the next and it's mostly Coach Blake."

Blake is serving as Sylvester's primary recruiter.

"They talk about how much they like me at North Carolina [and] how the program is being turned around so I need to give it a serious look," said Sylvester.

Sylvester, a 6-foot-2 215-pound linebacker from McDonough (Ga.) Union Grove, plans to give UNC the serious look Blake and Thigpen are requesting.

"If not before the spring is over, definitely during the summer I will visit," said Sylvester.

"They definitely seem like a top notch program in the making, right now. Coach [Butch] Davis and [the other coaches], they seem to have it going in the right direction."

Also, Sylvester, who has already visited Alabama and Georgia Tech, would like to make trips to N.C. State, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech. Some of those visits could occur during the schools' summer camp, giving Sylvester an opportunity to work out with the respective coaching staffs.

The aforementioned visits will prove to be vital, because Sylvester, who is currently wide open, is looking to make a verbal commitment by the end of July.

"I'd like to focus more on my senior football season and not have to deal with the traveling and the phone calls and the text messages," said Sylvester. "I just want to play football."

Come decision time, he said academics, location, and football tradition will be the biggest factors. Sylvester is looking for a good broadcast journalism program, a campus that's in the southeast, and a winning football tradition.

In addition to UNC, Sylvester has received scholarship offers from Alabama, Georgia Tech, N.C. State, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech.

With the exception South Carolina and N.C. State, Sylvester is being recruited as a linebacker. The Gamecocks and Wolfpack have given him the option of linebacker or running back.

Sylvester starred at both tailback and linebacker for Union Grove during his junior season. He rushed for 800 yards and six touchdowns.
