CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Did you miss what Roy Williams said on his radio program Monday night? Here are some excerpts from the live call-in show hosted by Woody Durham ...

On the ACC race, with two weeks left -

"It's something we set out every year I've ever coached to try and win the regular season title. I think it says more of what you do over a long period of time. And if you do that, it means you've had a great year and you'll be in better position for what comes later. It's a heck of a race. Virginia's had a great year, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Duke ... it's been a heck of a year for our league. I can make a case now for seven or eight teams making the NCAA Tournament and I'll be disappointed if we don't get that many."

On what he will you do differently this time against NC State?

"Hopefully we'll play better in every phase of the game. I watched the tape [of the first game against NC State] yesterday and today and we didn't rebound the basketball, we didn't move on offense, we didn't guard on defense ... Every loss is extremely disappointing, but I think I was more disappointed in our play in that game. ... They shot 76 percent in the second half and a few of them they were guarded, but for the most part we played poorly. So we've got to play a heck of a lot better. But if they make those shots they made yesterday, they'll beat anybody anytime. ... We can't allow them to get open looks or second looks and we've got to do a much better job on our offensive end."

On Marcus Ginyard as a leader -

"Marcus is one of our better leaders. ... When [BC fouled] him with less than a minute to play, I grabbed him and said 'They intentionally fouled you - they don't know you.' And he stepped up and made those free throws."

On leadership and toughness have become buzz words among fans and media this season -

"There are some things we'd like to have done better, but we don't have bad leadership. Reyshawn is a senior and he's not complaining about not getting 15 shots a game and he's going out there trying to defend his rear end off. Wes Miller is not complaining about not playing as much as last year and he's just trying to play his tail off every game. Maybe Davis [Noel] set [the bar too high]. Don't compare other guys to Tiger Woods because everybody's going to fail -- and it's a little like that for David Noel. ... Everybody has to have something to talk about and now it's leadership and toughness. I don't know many teams that could go into Boston College after they lost to Duke with a loud, sell out crowd and hang in there as tough as our guys did. I don't know of many people who could do what our kids did."

On the team's intensity level this season -

"Our intensity level for the most part this year has been sensational. But I don't think we were a nywhere near as intense against Virginia Tech as we were agaisnt Boston College. I always grade it by looking at the rebounding, who's getting the loose balls, and those kind of things. But I thought we were much more attentive to detail in the Boston College game than the Virginia Tech game."

On Brandan Wright's shoulder injury status -

"Brandan had no problems [in practice today]. I was very pleased [with his performance on Saturday]. On Friday I don't think he would have played and he said 'No, coach, I could have played' but I wouldn't have played him. That was a physical game, but he did fine."

On preparing the team for the stretch run -

"I gave them a quote for today - 'Champions have to have the skill, but they also have to have the will. In true champions, the will is much greater than the skill.' We do have to have both and we have to understand that the other teams have some of those, too."

On Brandan Wright's free throw form -

"Brandan's problem is his hands on his basketball - sometimes he has it too far on the palms. He's 18 years old and he's been shooting it that way his whole life ... He's got to get better hand position on the ball."

On substitution patterns and team chemistry -

"Nobody has ever told me team chemistry is better if eight guys play as opposed to 11. ... For us, our best chance to win is to play 11 or 12 guys. And that's the only thing I care about - it's what we think gives us the best chance to win."
