Heels Take Over Top Spot in Polls

Posted Jan 8, 2007

As expected, North Carolina is the new top ranked team in the country. The Tar Heels are No. 1 in both college basketball Top 25 polls that were released Monday.

Carolina moved up to No. 1 in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today coaches polls this week after three weeks at No. 2 in both polls.

This week marks Carolina's first appearance atop the national polls during the regular season since the week of Feb. 18, 2001. (UNC?was ranked No. 1 in the coaches poll in the postseason after winning the 2005 NCAA?championship.)

The No. 1 ranking marks the 16th different season in which the Tar Heels have reached the No. 1 spot in at least one AP poll. Carolina has been ranked No. 1 by the AP in the following seasons: 1956-57, 1957-58, 1958-59, 1977-78, 1981-82, 1982-83, 1983-84, 1985-86, 1986-87, 1987-88, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95, 1997-98, 2000-01 and 2006-07.

This is the 82nd poll in which the Tar Heels are No. 1 in the AP rankings. That is fourth-best all-time behind UCLA (134), Duke (110) and Kentucky (88).

This is the 544th time the Tar Heels have been ranked in the AP Top 10, the second-most in history (Kentucky 582 times. Duke is third with 470).
