Opening remarks -
"There's not a lot for me to say. A lot of it is obvious. We had a chance to do something unique up here in light of this very frustrating season. We're just not good enough. We weren't good enough. We were anemic on offense. We made the switch at quarterback. We thought it might give us a boost. Defensively, I appreciate the effort the players made. I'm real disappointed we gave up three at the end of the half. We're leaving football out there on the field. We move the ball at times and get down in position to make some scores, but the 40-yard line seems like a dadgum barrier for us. We've been around it a lot this year.
"Our players are disappointed and I'm sure they're very discouraged. I've asked them to take a couple of days off they have here and think about getting better individually and collectively. Those kids a have followed our lead for the most part this year, we have not been successful and I don't need to tell you that. It hurts me. It hurts the staff and all for the people that have been supportive of this program. There's not much more to be said. Fire away."
On the passing game -
"We missed some throws. We threw some in the ground. We had a deflected pass that we thought, was ruled otherwise as a backward pass. Nine-of-twenty passing is not a winning percentage. We need to complete 55 percent or more passes. We need to stay efficient with the running game, and we need to be more accurate and make the throws. I don't think there were a lot of dropped balls. I remember one where if we made the catch we would have probably made a first down.
"The turnovers… We're not getting enough and we're giving up too many. That margin must be getting really, really ugly at this point in the season. It's hard to win when you're in the minus side of that. It really is.
On next week's quarterback situation –
"We'll be out working tomorrow recruiting. We'll get together at least by telephone and talk about it. We'll try to make what we believe is the best decision when we get back. There is a time when I was going to alternate them, but I haven't done that."
On goals from here -
"Our goal right now is to win a football game – play well enough to win, get more points than they get. To get shut out is really disappointing."
Did you take a step back tonight?
"I wouldn't say that. I would say that we took a step forward defensively. I know we played hard on teams – our punter did a great job and our kicker didn't get to kick. We didn't resemble any type of precise attacking. That has to happen at this level. I know that our protection broke down.
"I get to see it differently than everybody else, and for the most part it's been good. That always attributes to negative passing plays, either through the sack or pressure. Today was the first time I thought we were not good at all at times in the protection areas."
On coming from behind altering the offensive plan of attack -
"We were down 9-0 at the half. We came out and got to midfield and had the backward pass called. I can't remember if they scored after that…they did. Now you're behind the eight ball. That's tough. So, huge momentum swing…. We're moving and then get smacked. It's hard. It's hard for the players. It's discouraging. Still, I believe we kept playing, and that's encouraging. You never stop playing this game.
"I felt good about the run game going in, and I felt fairly good about the way we tried to do it. We've got to mix some more plays throwing the football than we did tonight. It was anemic. It was ‘un-precise.'"
On Joe Dailey's comments that some offensive players lacked passion –
"I don't know what Joe was talking about. I love Joe, but you don't play this game without passion.
"If you've been around me, I love football. It's really hard not to play this game if you don't love it.
"When you lose, it hurts. It takes a lot out of you. I'm sure (the players) are hurting. You want to make sure you interpret that when you're down and disappointed. With a 1-6 record, you're discouraged. Joe is a great young man. We are fully supportive of him and we'll continue to do so. I don't think you can read a lot into his disappointment after a loss like this. I'm not going to make big deal out of this."
On suspending Garrett White from the game during pre-game warm-ups -
"I don't want to talk about that at this point. It's unfortunate. People come into this environment… I talked about how this would be, you've got to show some restraint. That's part of growing up."
