Thought it couldn't get any worse for North Carolina's 1-5 football team? The injury occurred in warm-ups, before the Heels' 37-20 loss to visiting South Florida.

In his absence, the Tar Heels will turn to junior Martel Thatch and sophomore Garrett White in their base package. Thatch passed White on the depth chart in recent weeks to be Edwards' backup, but the duo will compete in UNC's practice sessions for the starting job against the Cavaliers. Neither player has started a college game.

Virginia (2-5, 1-2 ACC) plays its second Thursday game in a month when it entertains North Carolina (1-5, 0-4) in a matchup that will be televised by ESPN at 7:45 p.m. North Carolina hasn't won at Scott Stadium since 1981, but Maryland hadn't won there since 1991 and that didn't prevent the Terrapins from overcoming a 20-0 halftime deficit.
