Newcomer Report

Here is how ASU's first-year players faired against Oregon in the team's 48-13 loss.

For a second straight week, junior college transfer Ryan Torain has been one of few bright spots for the Sun Devils. After another rough outing for ASU quarterback Rudy Carpenter, Torain's performance the last few weeks have been a saving grace for an offense still struggling to find an identity.

The junior running back has had back-to-back 100+ yard rushing games. In the 48-13 loss, Torain chipped in 113 yards on 19 carries. The ball carrier accounted for 64% of ASU's total offense on the day. Texas true freshman Dimitri Nance did not have any carries.

Quarterback Danny Sullivan came in late in the final quarter. The signal caller did not attempt any passes for a second straight game in mop up duty after a fumbled exchange under center.

Freshman safety Ryan McFoy registered six tackles and forced a fumble in a valiant effort for a defense that was under the desert sun much of the afternoon. Cornerbacks Justin Tryon and Chris Baloney had their hands full with Oregon's spread attack. The two transfers combined for nine stops in the game.

Defensive end Tranell Morant saw his second round of action this season, finishing the day with two solo tackles. BYU transfer Michael Marquardt also notched a couple of stops. It appears that defensive end Loren Howard re-aggravated a quad injury last week, putting any game action this year into some doubt.

The freshman linebacking trio of Travis Goethel, Mike Nixon, and Gerald Munns each had a stop against the Ducks. A key block on special teams by Goethel sprung Terry Richardson free on a 100-yard kick return in the 3rd quarter that ended up being the lone Sun Devil touchdown of the afternoon.

Jonathan Johnson had another solid outing, punting 4 times for a 43.2 yard average. His longest punt went for 51 yards.
