What are your initial impressions from today’s scrimmage?
“I’ve got to see the film. The thing I can see is we got some turnovers. But as far as how they performed, I’ll have to look at the film.”
Coach John Bunting wasn’t too pleased with the offense. How much of that was a function of the defense?
“I don’t know. I won’t know until I can see that film, and see if the offense was making the mistakes or we created things. I think we have the ability to make some things happen, because we’re better athletically and that will help.”
On the development of the athletic talent and are there differences scheme-wise?
“Not anything different scheme-wise, we have a system in place that we’re going to run. We might throw a couple of extra wrinkles in there now and then for the guys that are playing with experience.”
Do the details go up another level this year?
“No, everything is in that we run. We’ve just got to make sure we fine tune assignments and things like that.”
On cornerbacks Jordan Hemby and Jermaine Strong –
“Hemby has had some problems with shin splints, so he’s been a little limited. Jermaine Strong, again the whole pace of the game has picked up and he’s had some struggles. He’s a good athlete and he’s going to help us, but I don’t think he’s ready quite yet.”
Can you provide a progress report on the linebacker personnel?
“It starts with Larry Edwards. He’s our leader back there, he’s a very physical player and he understands our defense very well, and that helps. The other guy is Durrell Mapp. He played some good football for us last year. He was a little limited in the spring because of his shoulder, so now he’s just going through 15 or 16 new practices. He’s still got a ways to go to get back healthy and stay healthy. I think he hurt his knee a little bit today. I think [Mark] Paschal, as far as a MIKE linebacker, is stepping up. He has the physical tools, and he has that middle linebacker mentality, if there is such a thing. We need more than just those three guys. We’ve got to get some help from Chase Rice, Garrett White and Victor Worsley. We’ve had more depth than we’ve had before, but we’ve just got to get those guys in game situations.”
On developing a effective pass rush –
“What you could see today was the quarterback having to throw the ball over some piles. If you can get pressure with your front four, you’ve got a chance to play some different things behind. It looked like those interceptions were basically because the quarterback was throwing over people. And Coach [Kenny] Browning and Coach [Danny] Pearman have done a great job with those guys. They’re excited, their enthusiasm is very high and they like trying to get after the quarterback. If we give them situations, they can do that. They can’t do that 3rd and 2 or 3rd and 3, but when you get 3rd and 10s, then you can do something. So if we get to more 3rd and longs, we’ll have a chance.”
Who had the interceptions today?
“No idea, except Kareen [Taylor] got one. Victor Worsley jumped very high.”
