Dykes Makes 'Perfect Decision'

After a week hiatus, North Carolina goes back to adding names to their 2007 verbal commitment list. Mike Dykes became the latest when he pledged to the Tar Heels on Friday morning.

"First I called Coach [Frank] Cignetti around 10 o'clock this morning during my lifting and conditioning and then I called Coach [John] Bunting," said Dykes. "They were just happy. They said it made their week that I committed; that I made a great choice picking North Carolina; and they can't wait to see me and coach me."

Since North Carolina extended Dykes his first scholarship offer in the spring, the 6-foot-4 265-pound offensive lineman has listed the Tar Heels as his leader. However, it took an unofficial visit, plus some discussions with his family, to feel comfortable enough to pull the trigger.

"I was thinking about committing all the time," said Dykes. "I just wanted to make sure that it was the right time for me, just to make sure I didn't overlook anything.

"It was just a perfect decision. I felt comfortable with making it today and I felt confident. I talked it over with my family and it was all good."

Dykes selected the Tar Heels over offers from Akron, Duke, Kentucky, Miami (Ohio), Temple, and Toledo.

"It was a little bit of everything," said Dykes. "I like the campus – I got a campus visit. They've got a great coaching staff – Coach Bunting, Coach Cignetti, Coach [Mark] Weber – that's a great coaching staff. And that football program is excellent also – weight lifting, conditioning, academic support – everything about the football program just intrigued me."

Once on campus, North Carolina is looking to plug Dykes in the interior of the offensive line with a good possibility of being redshirted his freshman season to gain weight.

Dykes is the fourth offensive lineman to commit to the Tar Heels – 18th recruit overall.

A three-year starter at Pittsburgh (Pa.) Woodland Hills High School, Dykes earned all-conference recognition for his play along the offensive line as a junior.
