Injury Delays Carter's Enrollment

Due to the rehab of his knee, Tar Heels 2006 signee Bruce Carter will not be enrolling this summer. Instead, the Havelock (N.C.) High School standout athlete will arrive in Chapel Hill in January of 2007.

"I'm not enrolled at Carolina yet, I'll be enrolling in January," said Carter. "After my surgery, that's when we decided [to greyshirt].

Carter, who verbally committed to the Heels over a year ago, had arthroscopic knee surgery in April. He suffered the injury during the '05 season and missed a game and a half, but it was diagnosed as a sprain at first. It wasn't determined until after basketball season that surgery was needed to remove excess cartilage.

"I pulled some cartilage in my knee, and they just went in there and pulled it out," said Carter. "My knee is coming back to 100 percent slowly, but surely. It should be 100 percent some time in August."

For precautionary reasons, the Tar Heels' coaching staff wanted Carter to skip out on the 2006 season to make sure he is fully recovered from the injury.

"They wanted me to rehab for six months and I'm going to take two classes at Craven [Community College] down where I stay at," said Carter. "The classes will transfer over, and I'll just enroll when my scholarship starts in January."

Also, Carter will be working out with his former high school team, and he has been running and lifting at a local recreation center.

For Havelock, Carter starred at quarterback. However, for the Tar Heels, the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder will get looks at running back, linebacker, and safety.

During his senior season, Carter scored 15 all-purpose touchdowns and totaled over 1,500 combined passing and rushing yards.
