CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- It's one of the biggest weeks in the football recruiting season. UNC's football camps, which begin Monday afternoon, are a chance for the Tar Heel coaching staff to personally evaluate and make an impression on recruits. Stay tuned to Inside Carolina for daily scoop from the camps.

Despite the increase of pre-summer scholarship offers, college camps are still an integral part of the recruiting process. In addition to being used as an evaluation tool, coaching staffs are able to use camps as a means to get recruits on campus.

During his National Signing Day press conference earlier this year, head coach John Bunting emphasized how important the Tar Heels’ camps were to their 2006 recruiting class.

"Our coaches did a marvelous job identifying who those great players were, getting them on this campus, getting them into our camps – 20 of the 28 signees were in our camps this past summer so we could evaluate them as people and as athletes," Bunting said.

More so now than in the past, camps are being used to bring top recruits on campus and get them familiar with the program and the coaching staff.

Scout.com four-star prospect, Aleric Mullins, who signed with UNC in February, attended two of the Tar Heels’ camps. He cited comfort level as one of his reasons for choosing UNC over schools like Oklahoma and Auburn.

Tailback Ryan Houston, a Scout.com four-star recruit, is expected to be among the many UNC targets making a camping cameo. Other in-state stars scheduled to attend include Tydreke Powell, Quan Sturdivant and Wesley Saunders.

Although camps are now being used as an extra unofficial visit, it’s still one of the best ways a college coaching staff can evaluate talent.

Last summer, Shaun Draughn and Vince Jacobs were among the North Carolina signees who earned themselves a UNC scholarship offer following their performance at the Tar Heels’ camp.

Some prospects expected to camp at UNC this week and looking to land a Tar Heel offer include tailback/cornerback Josh Oglesby, safety Daryl Vereen, cornerback Justin Byers, and wide receiver Sean Jeffcoat.

North Carolina will host its three-day “Individual Camp” camp starting Monday, and then will end the week with a two-day rising seniors camp starting on Friday.

Inside Carolina will have the inside scoop from the camps, so check back each day for the latest insider buzz.
