Shammond, Vasco come up short at Chavis

Shammond Williams

RALEIGH -- You go to see Jawad Williams and end up catching Shammond Williams, Vasco Evtimov and P.J. Tucker. Such is Chavis League basketball.

The efforts of Williams and Evtimov were not enough, as their Deans squad fell to the Black Devils on Tuesday night in Emery gym on the campus of St. Augustine's College.

Williams opened the game by hitting a three from well beyond the arc. As the only NBA player on the floor, he could have beaten many of his defenders off the dribble, but instead seemed to content to launch a number of long range shots. He finished the game with 18 points (7-13 FG, 4-10 3pt) and several assists.

And then there was Evtimov. The 6-10, 260-pound Bulgarian was impossible to miss in the parking lot before the game or on the court shortly thereafter. While he's only playing in the league sporadically, and using it as a chance to work on his conditioning, Evtimov looked rusty. He got very little lift off the ground, had trouble handling passes and rebounds and missed some short-range shots. However, he did end up with 14 points (7-12 FG) and 11 boards and showed onlookers why he was a All-American in high school and coveted prospect. For his size, he moves well on the break and has impressive agility in the post. The crowd wanted him to dunk his point-blank shots, but the crafty Evtimov used the glass each time instead, adding a little bit of flair.

N.C. State grad Anthony Grundy, playing for the Black Devils, led all scorers with 29 points; nailing threes, scoring on the break and hitting an array of mid-range shots using both hands.

Tucker also played a pivotal role in the win, as the local high school star did what he does best -- wreaking havoc in the paint, collecting boards and short-range baskets. Tucker's final stat totals were 16 points (8-11 FG) and eight boards. He also threw down some loud two-handed dunks that brought the crowd to its feet in the final minutes.
