Opening remarks
“Spring Games are Spring Games; they’re usually quite boring. I thought in the first half was rather exciting. I saw some great things out there with the run game. I saw some good throws out there, but unfortunately some big passes came back for penalties.

“But you all know Jesse Holley is a great player. What I wanted to see was Brooks Foster make some plays, and he did.

“These quarterbacks are two guys that are going to be competing throughout summer camp. There’s no telling how it’s going to work out, but it’s fun to see that competition and both getting better every day.

“Barrington Edwards had a good day running the football – that’s what I expect him to do – and that will be another dynamic to our football program if he can continue play like that and do the right things off the field. I anticipate that he’s starting to get it. That would be good for us.

“Offensive line-wise, I’ve been very impressed throughout the spring how each week we made progress. I’m real anxious to watch the tape and see if we made as much progress as I think we did.

“Defensive line-wise, I’m anxious to get a couple of these [2006] signees in here – I think we’re going to need them. And of course it was a great day for us recruiting. There were a number of really good recruits out there before, during and after the game. We’ve got to keep doing a great job there.”

On the quarterbacks
“They’re both good runners and they’re both big-time ‘competers.’ Cameron is perhaps a more natural thrower, Joe is one that can throw on the run as you saw today. Both can operate in and out of the pocket. What makes them different right now is Joe has been under center in 11 games. That’s a distinct advantage. We had one snap under center on the ground and several almost over Joe or Cam’s head. The center exchange was a big problem at the beginning of the spring, but it’s starting to work itself out like it always does. They’re both very savvy football players, and they’re both gym rats – they can’t get enough of it.”

Compare this year with two QBs to last year with one.
“Oh my goodness, it’s quite different. It makes you sleep a little bit better at night. And you probably saw where we moved Joey Bozich to fullback, and we may have found something there.”

Defensively this year…
“I think we have even more speed on the field this year. I think once again, we’re going to need a couple of them to play, because I’m concerned about the depth of our defensive line. We’re two-deep right now. I’d like to see one of these guys come in that could be a pass rusher. I’m pleased with the progress of Hilee Taylor; I think he’s had a really good spring. Camaron Thomas has had a really good spring. Mark Paschal, a MIKE linebacker, has had a really good spring. And Garrett White, in the same linebacker position, got a ton of reps after Larry [Edwards] was sent down to the academic center. He’s going to be a good player. Moving Cooter Arnold to the secondary was a good move. I think he’s going to find a way on to the field and help us this fall. And Kareen Taylor has had an excellent spring. He’s become a real leader on our team, which we need him to do. I have visions of him playing nickelback, because he’s one heck of a blitzer.”
